‘What We Call Love’ is the latest single from the immensely talented artist Joanna Gemma Auguri. It’s a unique avant-pop song that blends melodic pop songwriting with unique instrumentation (bass clarinet and cello, for example) and a truly haunting ability to sing slowly and darkly over a menacing accompaniment. “Dramaturgically, the song tells the story of how the great and hopeful feelings you have for someone suddenly turn into coldness or even indifference,” she explains. “It is a painful awakening from a state of projection and dreaming. It is an inevitable fall, and yet you remember the magic.” This new single is taken from her forthcoming album, Hiraeth, which is due for release on June 28th, 2024. -Dan Peeke
